Leaders should not wait until they are leading to decide what kind of leader they will be. I encourage all leaders and potential leaders to have some kind of leadership statement that clearly outlines the philosophy they do or will embody as a leader. To help you do this, I attach a book chapter entitled Developing a Leadership Philosophy (PDF). Note: to view the PDF file, you will need the Free Acrobat Reader. As I mention in the chapter, you will develop your philosophy through the experience you've had, even at the hands of a less-than-adequate leader. Hopefully, this chapter will cause you to reflect on all of your experience--the good and the bad--so that your leadership philosophy will be a full expression of who you are.
