January 11, Choosing to Give

Today’s Reading: Psalms 51-55

“I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praise your name, Lord, for it is good” - Psalm 54:6

The act of giving is not only a duty but also an act of worship that you should freely embrace. Your attitude should not be that you have to give but rather that you get to give. In today’s verse, David wrote that he was giving a freewill offering — not something God directed him to do but something David chose to do of his own volition. Paul taught about this attitude toward giving:

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8-9).

What is your attitude toward giving? Are you a cheerful giver? Is it something you feel compelled to do or choose to do?
