January 19. God Is Speaking

Today’s reading: Psalms 91-95

“Today, if only you would hear his voice, ‘Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness, where your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did’” - Psalm 95:7b-9.

God can speak through others; His Word; the preached Word; a still, small voice; or through circumstances. This passage warns you not to harden your heart whenever and however God is speaking to you. Notice that in today’s verses, God is speaking directly through the author to the reader, and the author recognized that he was hearing from the Lord. This passage is then quoted three times in Hebrews 3 and 4 by another author who was speaking on the Lord’s behalf. The point is that God is always speaking and “broadcasting” His messages, many times using others to get the message to you. The questions are: Are you listening, what is He saying, and how are you recording it to keep it before you? Be listening today and make sure you stay open and don’t harden your heart.
