January 28, Humility

Today’s reading: Psalm 136-140

“Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar” - Psalm 138:6.

Another word for lowly is humble, and the opposite of humility is pride. Both those traits attract God’s immediate attention, for He helps the humble and opposes the proud. Mary understood this truth when she praised God during her visit to her cousin Elizabeth: “He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty” (Luke 1:52-53). The implications for you from what Mary said are clear: humble yourself and be God’s friend, or be proud and risk having God humble or even humiliate you. The choice is obvious but not always easy to do. Where do you need to humble yourself, even if you believe you are right and others are wrong?
