January 31, Word Change
Today’s reading: Psalm 119
“Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain” - Psalm 119:36.
Your heart is inclined toward evil, but that tendency can be reversed. God is able to change hearts including yours, but you must want the transformation to take place. It starts when you see the need for change, then in faith you ask God to change you. After that, you confront your own proclivity for self-interest by studying God’s word, all the while praying for your heart to stay focused on Him. Study of God’s word is important for reasons explained by the writer of Hebrews:
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account (4:12-13).
Are you willing to put in the time and effort necessary so that God’s word can change your heart?
