Today’s reading: Psalm 46-50

“People who have wealth but lack understanding
are like the beasts that perish” - Psalm 49:20.

Many people dream of winning the lottery and therefore play it every day, providing governments, companies and illegal entities a lot of money. Yet few who play are prepared for the pressures that come with money and don’t understand how difficult it can be to serve the Lord and also have and maintain riches. Jesus spoke about this issue on many occasions, saying things like this: “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:23) and “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort” (Luke 6:24). The understanding that today’s verse refers to is that God gives wealth but expects the wealthy to use their money to relieve the plight of the poor as God’s and their heart direct. Do you dream of lottery riches? Or are you working hard to amass a fortune from business? If you are doing either, then gird yourself with a proper perspective on wealth and God’s desire to place your money under His direction and Lordship before you have it.
