June 7, Opposition

Today’s reading: Psalms 31-35

“But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me” - Psalm 31:14-15.

The first book of Psalms, which is comprised of Psalm 1 to 41, is filled with verses that chronicle David’s persecution and opposition as the king. One may not think David would not have encountered so much trouble, for God had powerfully and sovereignly chosen David and was with him. Yet God’s choice did not exempt David from all kinds of problems, some of them by his own doing. You may be going through hell, so to speak, as you do God’s will, and that has caused you to doubt whether or not you heard from the Lord and are on the right path. Yet the presence of opposition is not an indication you are out of God’s will, but rather a confirmation that you are in it! James wrote: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4). Have you allowed your time of testing to cast doubt on you’re the way you are walking? Have you had second thoughts about whether or not you have heard from the Lord? Be encouraged today that you are on the right path!
