May 11, Cast Your Cares on Him

Today’s reading: Psalms 51-55

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” - Psalm 55:22.

Have you ever had someone say in response to your problem, “You just need to give it to the Lord.”? It can be annoying and even difficult to comprehend how you can hand off a visible problem to an invisible God. What they are really saying, and what the psalmist was communicating in this verse, is that you must first take your cares to the Lord in prayer and pray until your burden is lifted—until you feel like God has heard and has indicated He has it under control. Then you must leave it with Him and resist every temptation to worry, fret, or be anxious as reflected by not eating, sleeping, or carrying out your day-to-day duties. Peter wrote the same thing as the psalmist in his first epistle: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). What are you holding on to that you need to cast upon the Lord? What is stopping you? Which part of the process do you need to engage: the prayer or the follow through—or both!
