October 8, Quenching Your Thirst
Today’s reading: Psalms 36-40
“For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light” - Psalm 36:9.
Throughout the gospels, Jesus referred to thirst as a spiritual condition, and the psalmist did the same in today’s verse. The writer also introduced the concept of God bringing light to any life or situation, and Jesus expanded the concept when He said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Then Jesus brought in the water metaphor when He spoke with the woman at the well:
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” (John 4:10-12).
Are you thirsty and trying to quench your thirst by way of your career, cars, education, travels, or relationships? Are you searching for light or answers in other philosophies outside the Lord and His word? What can you do to drink from the right source where your life, work and ministry are concerned?
