Monday Memo 1226: The Power of Diligence
“Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” — Proverbs 22:29
Purpose may begin with inspiration, but it is sustained by diligence. Inspiration ignites; diligence endures. The difference between good intentions and great impact is often measured in persistence—the quiet, consistent effort that few see but everyone benefits from.
When we think of the heroes of faith, we often remember their dramatic moments: Moses parting the Red Sea, David facing Goliath, Esther risking her life before the king. But what we don’t see are the years of patient obedience and daily diligence that prepared them for those defining moments. David was faithful in the fields long before he was famous in the palace. He wasn’t crowned only because he was gifted; he was chosen because he was diligent.
Like David, you may feel unseen or overlooked in your current field, but diligence in hidden seasons is what prepares you for visible ones. In today’s world of instant results, diligence may feel old-fashioned. We admire creativity, innovation, charisma, and speed—but diligence often goes unnoticed. Yet in God’s kingdom, diligence is one of the highest forms of worship. It’s the decision to keep showing up, keep serving, and keep building even when progress seems slow or invisible.
There was a season in my ministry when I was writing newsletters and purpose materials for a small audience. I often wondered if anyone was reading them at all (at times, I still wonder that). But I couldn’t stop. I sensed God say, “Keep going” so I kept writing—month after month, year after year. Those writings are now the foundation of my PurposeQuest resources that reach thousands across the world every day in multiple languages. Diligence turned my small beginning into global influence.
I tried to model my work after Daniel who served far away from his homeland in Babylon. He didn’t rise to leadership because of charm or connections. Scripture says, “Daniel distinguished himself among the administrators by his exceptional qualities” (Daniel 6:3). Those “exceptional qualities” weren’t mystical gifts—they were habits of excellence, reliability, and diligence. When others cut corners, Daniel stayed faithful. His consistency and integrity built trust, and his trustworthiness brought promotion. No one else may be watching what you do but God is—and He is the one who oversees your purpose progress and breakthroughs.
Diligence doesn’t just apply to big goals; it matters most in the small things. Jesus said, “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10). That means the way you manage your time, keep your word, and follow through on commitments reveals your readiness for greater responsibility. God promotes based on faithfulness, not fame. And He promotes those who develop their creative purpose, not just talk about it.
Are you discouraged? Ready to give up and move on to something new? I’ve been there, tempted to quit or reinvent myself when things seemed slow. But looking back now, I see that God was using every season to build something in me, not just through me. My fifties became my growth years, my sixties my most productive, and my seventies my most meaningful. I haven’t always been clever, but I have been consistent—and God has blessed that by His grace.
If you’re in a season of slow or even no progress, take heart. God sees your faithfulness. Every email sent, every lesson learned and taught, every seed sown in obedience counts. The results may not show today, but diligence guarantees a harvest in due time (see Galatians 6:9). Remember: diligence is the bridge between purpose discovered and purpose fulfilled.
Reflection Questions
-
Where in your life or purpose have you been tempted to quit because results seem slow?
-
What small, consistent steps could you take this week to strengthen your diligence?
-
How does viewing your daily work as worship change your attitude toward perseverance?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that faithfulness is success in Your eyes. Help me to serve with diligence, to keep showing up even when I don’t see immediate results. Strengthen my hands and renew my heart for the long journey ahead. Let every act of diligence reflect Your glory and build something that lasts beyond me. Amen.
Application
Choose one area in your creative purpose where you’ve grown inconsistent. Set a realistic goal and commit to daily progress for seven days without skipping. Keep a brief record of what you do each day. At week’s end, thank God for what He accomplished through your consistency. Remember: diligence builds the bridge between purpose and fulfillment.
