Purpose Study Bible 311: All You Need
The story of Ruth is one of God’s protection, provision, and purpose. Ruth was a vulnerable widow in a new country, yet God became everything she lacked but needed. Her journey is a beautiful example of how God cares for those who trust Him as they walk out their creative purpose. Boaz told Ruth not to worry and then blessed Ruth with a tangible sign of God’s provision:
“Now don’t worry about a thing, my daughter. I will do what is necessary, for everyone in town knows you are a virtuous woman." ... Then Boaz said to her, "Bring your cloak and spread it out." He measured six scoops of barley into the cloak and placed it on her back” (Ruth 3:11&15, NLT).
The apostle Paul later wrote about that same kind of faith and contentment:
I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:11-13).
Are you content in your current season, or anxious about your future? Is your creativity dependent on your circumstances, or on God’s ability to provide? Ruth’s faith and Boaz’s generosity remind us that God’s provision is never limited by our situation. If He could protect Ruth, provide for her, and fulfill His purpose through her, He can do the same for you.
Be faithful to who you are, and God will be faithful to who He has promised to be. Your circumstances may shift, but His purpose and provision never will.
