Purpose Study Bible 312: Divine Urgency

Boaz determined to settle the matter of his relationship with Ruth quickly, just as Naomi predicted he would.

Then Naomi said, “Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today." Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer he had mentioned came along. (Ruth 3:18 and 4:1).

Boaz acted with divine urgency — not recklessness, but prompt obedience born of faith. This is reminiscent of Abraham when God directed Him to sacrifice Isaac:

Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about (Genesis 22:3).

It's important to wait on the Lord, but not wait any longer than needed. Once you discover your creative purpose, it's time to act. Don't expect an engraved invitation from heaven to do so. If your purpose is to dispense mercy, go find people who need it. If it's to write, then start writing. If it's to speak, use technology to create opportunities. Don't wait but act with divine urgency when God clarifies who you are and what you are to do.

Where have you been waiting when it's time to act? What steps can you take today to express the gifts God has given you? What situation presents itself to you regularly for which God expects you to act with a sense of urgency? Boaz had an opportunity and he seized it. God has presented you with similar divine appointments. He has presented the door, but you have to open and walk through it, not tomorrow or next week, but right now. So act today with divine urgency—faith in motion, not faith in waiting.
