Purpose Study Bible 314: Positioned for Purpose
For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty. When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days, in the enclosed garden of the king’s palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest who were in the citadel of Susa. - Esther 1:4-5
Let’s move on from our study of Ruth to focus on the life story of Esther. Esther’s name isn’t mentioned in the first chapter of her book, which instead centers on the opulence and arrogance of King Xerxes. The rest of the chapter recounts his six-month festival and Queen Vashti’s refusal to appear before him—but hidden within that political spectacle is the opening act of God’s purpose.
In one way, this story is reminiscent of the Christmas story, when Caesar’s decree sent Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem for Jesus’ birth. God uses governments and businesses to position His people for purpose. Purpose doesn’t require perfect conditions; it often unfolds through imperfect people and worldly systems. God even uses the arrogance and ambitions of others to advance His divine plan.
What’s more, He didn’t violate anyone’s free will as He arranged circumstances that would one day bring Esther to the palace. Just as God worked behind the scenes for her, He is setting the stage for your purpose premiere—preparing you for your own virtuoso performance. Little did Esther know what lay ahead for her, and the same is true for you.
Your job is to find and equip yourself for success before, not after, God opens the door. What are you doing to become a better writer, speaker, artist, leader, or teacher? Where must you exercise faith today so you’ll be ready tomorrow when your own royal drama unfolds? God is doing His part; make sure you’re doing yours, so that when the curtain rises on your purpose story, you’ll be ready for your role.
