Purpose Study Bible 331: Everyone Has a Part in the Work
All their neighbors assisted them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with valuable gifts, in addition to all the freewill offerings. - Ezra 1:6
As the people prepared to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, the work did not belong only to those who made the journey. Ezra records that their neighbors assisted them with silver, gold, goods, livestock, and valuable gifts, along with freewill offerings. Some were called to go and build, but others were called to support the builders. Different roles emerged, yet all contributed to the same purpose: restoring worship and advancing the work of God.
This reminds us that God’s work is rarely accomplished by individuals acting alone. The rebuilding of the temple required builders as well as those willing to provide resources. The people who supplied the materials were not less important than those who laid the stones. Both were participating in what God had initiated.
Paul described the same principle in 1 Corinthians 12, explaining that believers have different gifts but serve the same Lord. Some lead, some serve, some teach, and some give, yet each role contributes to the common good. God distributes abilities and opportunities so His people can work together to accomplish what none of them could accomplish alone.
The goal in Ezra’s day was rebuilding the temple, but the larger work was establishing the worship and rule of God among His people. Today the work continues as believers use their gifts to build and extend the Kingdom of God on earth. Some build directly while others support those who build, but every contribution matters. What part might God be inviting you to play in that work? Are you called in this season to lead, to serve, or to support someone else’s effort? Whatever your creative purpose, the important question is whether you are willing to contribute what you have so that God’s work can move forward.
