Purpose Study Bible 326: God Is Watching
An edict had been issued to exterminate all the Jews. Mordecai, Esther, her attendants, and all the Jews are fasting and praying. Then we read this:
That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes. “What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?” the king asked. “Nothing has been done for him,” his attendants answered (Esther 6:1-3).
Suddenly, God intervened and brought to the king's attention Mordecai's good deed that alerted the throne of an assassination attempt against the king. The perpetrators were apprehended and the king was safe, but Mordecai had never been recognized for his service. What a seemingly strange time for God to bring Mordecai’s faithfulness to the king’s attention.
Yet that is how God is: He never forgets what you do for Him. I like to picture that He has a big book and a sharp pencil, and He writes down what you do, and it is forever remembered. It is reminiscent of what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 15:58: "Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."
Are you working in faith, knowing that God is watching? Do you believe that you will ultimately, if not immediately, be rewarded for your labor "in the Lord"? What difference should this reality have on your creative and purpose work? The king proceeded to honor Mordecai, even though the kingdom was in turmoil, and God will do the same for you, if you entrust your work and your subsequent rewards to His faithful attention.
