Purpose Study Bible 347: Take Courage
After King Artaxerxes gave Ezra everything he needed to return to Jerusalem, Ezra wrote:
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, who has put it into the king’s heart to bring honor to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem in this way and who has extended his good favor to me before the king and his advisers and all the king’s powerful officials. Because the hand of the Lord my God was on me, I took courage and gathered leaders from Israel to go up with me” (Ezra 7:27-28).
Notice the order of events. Ezra didn't say that he first found courage and then discovered God’s hand was with him. Nor did he say that God removed every reason to be afraid. Instead, because he recognized God’s gracious hand upon him, he took courage. Courage wasn't something that happened to Ezra; it was something he chose in response to God’s presence and favor.
The same is true for you. Courage isn't the absence of fear but the decision to move forward because you know God is with you. God’s hand doesn't eliminate the need for courage—it becomes the reason you can choose courage. Like Joshua before him, Ezra still had to gather leaders, organize the journey, and take the first step. God supplied the favor, but Ezra supplied the obedience—and the courage.
Where do you need to take courage today? What decision have you delayed because you're waiting to feel courageous? If you know God's hand is on your life, then don't wait for fear to disappear. Take courage, step forward in faith, and trust that God's gracious hand will continue to guide, strengthen, and sustain you as you fulfill His creative purpose.
