Purpose Study Bible 310: At His Feet
As mentioned in a previous study, the book of Ruth could have easily been named the book of Naomi. However, God chose to focus on Ruth perhaps because of her obedient and humble faith and submission. In this study, we read the instructions that Naomi gave Ruth concerning Boaz:
"When he [Boaz] lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do” (Ruth 3:4).
Sometimes God’s direction doesn’t make sense at first. Naomi’s instructions to Ruth were unconventional and could have been easily misunderstood, yet they were rooted in faith and obedience. It was not a part of Ruth's culture but Naomi's for Ruth to do what she did. Ruth didn’t argue or hesitate—she simply trusted that God was working through her mentor in the moment. Her humble act of lying at Boaz’s feet became the key that unlocked her future and secured her place in God’s redemptive plan—becoming a part of Jesus' family tree.
Is God asking you to do something that seems unusual, requiring obedient faith on your part? Perhaps you are to write a book but have no audience, or to return to school but have no money or time? Maybe you are to start a business but don't have the funding or the expertise?
You may not always understand what God is asking you to do, but when you move forward in faith, He often uses the very things that appear strange to open the doors to your creative purpose. Trust His voice, follow His prompting, and rest at His feet. There you’ll find both His covering and His purpose for your life.
