Purpose Study Bible 365: Creative Praise

To an outside observer, Hannah's story might seem tragic. After years of barrenness, she finally had the son she longed for, only to give him up while he was still a young child. Yet Hannah didn't respond with resentment or regret. Instead, she responded with praise, as evidenced by her prayer in 1 Samuel 2, which began with

“My heart rejoices in the Lord; in the Lord my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance. There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God” (1 Samuel 2:1-2).

Hannah's prayer through verse 10 is a wonderful example of a woman using her creativity to praise God. She expressed her devotion in beautiful, poetic language that reflected her personal experience with Him. Her suffering, waiting, and eventual deliverance became the raw material for a creative expression that is now included in God's inspired Word. What she experienced personally became something that would encourage others for generations.

Are you using your creativity to worship God? Are you expressing your unique gifts and creative purpose in ways that are consistent with who God made you to be? Or are you copying what others do and say because of your sense of inadequacy? Have you considered how your own experiences, even the painful ones, can become material for your creative expression?

Hannah went through a difficult season, but when she emerged from it, she gave creative expression to her gratitude and understanding of who God is. I urge you to read her prayer in its entirety and use it as a model and inspiration to praise God creatively in a way that is consistent with who He made you to be.

This isn't limited to what you do in a church service or corporate worship setting. Your creativity can be an expression of personal praise wherever you are, reflecting what God has done in you and through you, whether you're writing, teaching, building, serving, or solving problems. Your worship doesn't have to look or sound like anyone else's, for God has given you unique gifts and experiences that can bring Him glory through both your words and deeds.
